nonviolent executions, steve ben israel’s one-man show, is his latest séance to contact the living. A series of short takes combining humor, poetry, stories of rare poignancy, and his virtuosic acting abilities,
nonviolent executions is an evening of entertainment with extraordinary
intelligence and heart.

Mr. israel started working as a comedian more than 50 years ago, then joined The Living Theatre and for many years toured this country, Europe, North Africa and Brazil as a leading  actor in that
ground-breaking group. More recently, he has performed extensively on the downtown scene, in such venues as The Kitchen, The Performing Garage, and The Nuyorican Poets Café, and has appeared in movies by
Bertolucci, been a featured artist on recordings by Frederic Rzewski and Anthony Braxton, and has been a guest commentator on NPR’s “All Things Considered.” He is a recipient of a 2007 Obie Award.

In nonviolent executions, israel comes full circle, to inhabit the city of his waking dreams and nightmares to confront the beauty, the horror and the possibilities of “the island that creates the spice that gives
much of the country its flavor.”

When he finds communality with an immigrant cab driver, a cashier at
the phone company, or an old jazz hand, he touches something in us all.
When he tells his audience that he doesn’t “like the way white people are portrayed in movies,” he is completely sincere. When he sings the cantorial “Ballad of Black, White, and Jew,” sadness and hope ride a
North African musical motif from hidden grief to deliverance.

steve ben israel would present an audience’s most generous face to itself. If he pierces the slick armor masquerading as sense in our time with jolts of love and compassion, it is only his compulsion and our
deep pleasure to be so subjected.

Thanks to all of  our guests and volunteers who made our November 2nd First Mondays event at B. Smith’s a great success. We had over 200 guests, including many new faces, and we are excited at the great energy and ideas everyone is bringing to the Foundation through these and other events.  Thanks to all our “Celebrity Bartenders”. We are hoping to develop a 2010 Benefit Calendar with their photos.  All photos from the event should be up on our website by next week.

First Mondays, the live networking component of the “I Can Still Do That Foundation”, has had some success stories of people meeting new friends and partners (both business and otherwise) and sharing knowledge and wisdom. If you want to share a success story, please email it to us. We are collecting them for the website.

We have been invited back to B. Smith’s and are also looking at other venues for a possible “power lunch” networking program. Please let me know if anyone would like to volunteer to organize this or our Secret Santa/Hanukkah Harry Holiday Party.

Comedian/Still do That Advisor Marcy J. Gordon
will be at:
Belly Laughs’ Make Me A Headliner Comedy Contest at New York Comedy Club on Saturday November 14 at 6:00pm.  As a contestant she will have a chance to win the following prizes:

  • One comic will be selected to do a paid spot on the 10 PM
    Saturday Night Pro show following the contest.
  • The winner will also receive a booking to headline a show at
    Broadway Comedy Club.  Headlining
    would include up to a 40 minute spot and a cut of the door.
  • The winner will also receive industry exposure via an e mail
    to more than 50 agents, managers, bookers, casting directors and more announcing
    and congratulating the winner.

    All contestants will be given a 7 to 10 minute spot and a
    chance to win this great prize.

All contestants are required to bring at least 6 people for a spot on this show.
If I do not bring six people to the show I may still be able to perform but will not be eligible to win the contest.

YOU will be the judges of the show and your applause will go a long way to helping Bellly Laughs select the winners if you’ve been meaning to come to one of my shows, this is the one to see.

While you do need to bring at least six people you are allowed to bring as many people as you would like to the show.

They are expecting this show to sell out so reservations are mandatory.  Everyone must reserve their seats at least 24 hours before the show.

like to publish the book by February. All proceeds will go to charity.

We are also organizing an “I Can Still do That” Talent Show for Spring 2010. Interested volunteers (or contestants) please contact me or Tony

Here’s a sample Brownie recipe from Advisor Prof. Sondra Farganis, who taught at CUNY and Vassar and ran the Vera List and Wolfson Centers at the New School:

In one of her many cookbooks, Maida Heatter reported that she always made sure that she had brownies in the freezer so that
she could always pop half to a full dozen into her purse should she need to cheer up a friend, visit a pal for lunch, say thank you to a neighbor or
co-worker. What about adding to the reasons-for-having-forbidden-
brownies-in-the-freezer list: leaving some for the mail person who put your mail UNDER the awning during a rainstorm; or handing some to the staff in the gym who actually clean up after the self-centered users who, unreflecting, believe themselves to be “entitled”,  think only of themselves and leave the shared space
a mess; or the dry cleaning lady who brings her daughter’s brood to work with her so the daughter can earn a living wage in a nursing home.

Herewith the Basic Brownie a la Foundation, launched in honor of the
“I Can Still Do That Foundation” and “First Mondays.”

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Line a 9×13 pan with aluminum foil.  Spray canola oil on pan and set pan aside.

Over low heat, in a medium or large saucepan, melt 2 sticks of butter (1/2 lb) with 12 oz bag of bittersweet (or semisweet) morsels. Remove from heat and cool 15 minutes.

While waiting, either call a friend who needs a pick-me-up, email a relative who lives alone, or write out that check to a foundation you know needs it more than you do. Your brownie batter was looked after by the GOOD in your absence, so continue with your baking.

To the cooled brownie mixture, stir in 2 cups of sugar (color choice of sugar is yours). Then, one at a time, stir in 4 large eggs, adding each only after the previous one is fully incorporated. Stir in either 2 tsp of vanilla extract or 1/2 tsp of coffee extract. Mix in 1 cup of flour (white unbleached if possible), 1/4 tsp. salt, perhaps 1/8 tsp ground cinnamon.

To the batter, add 1 cup chopped nuts, ideally walnuts. I know we all have friends who cannot eat nuts, but I fear that brownies only work in size and texture if they include nuts.

Pour completed mixture into pan, making sure the batter is evenly distributed. Put into the oven and bake for 25 minutes. Cool at room temperature on a cake rack for three hours, and then refrigerate until cold–that way they slice evenly.  one can also freeze them for an hour instead of refrigerating for three. While waiting to remove from pan from refrigerator or freezer, continue to “do good things” (to quote a dear friend.) Then,

cut into 2 inch squares, wrap in
foil, freeze until needed!

Carolyn Enger, child of a Holocaust survivor, sees her music as an opportunity
to create a bridge from her family’s experience to a universal one. Reflecting
the theme of the Puffin Cultural Forum’s current art exhibit (Humanity
Survives), Carolyn will present a special program of music by Israeli
composers, Paul Ben-Haim, Avner Dorman, Lior Navok and Jewish-American
composers Leonard Bernstein and Robert Starer, who both spent time in Israel
contributing to rebuilding Jewish musical life after the Holocaust.

Carolyn has
appeared in many venues throughout New York City and New Jersey, including
Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, Bruno Walter Auditorium at Lincoln Center,
and Steinway Hall; has released a recording, In Evening Air; has recorded
a forthcoming CD; and is currently working on a multimedia project combining
music, literature, and images, centering on the lives of Holocaust survivors.

In addition
to her many recitals, Carolyn also appears in outreach concerts for libraries,
community centers, churches, and synagogues. Her concert repertoire includes
piano literature from all periods, ranging from the great masterworks of
European history to fresh new discoveries from living composers.

Project Renewal,
the only organization that provides everything homeless New Yorkers need to move from the streets and into health, homes and jobs, is proud to announce the launch of an exciting,
innovative new project, Dining for a Difference.


Dining for a Difference is a month-long initiative in February, 2010 that will give consumers the opportunity to purchase a $40 discount card from Project Renewal.  In turn, cardholders can use their cards at
restaurants across the city, where they’ll receive $25 off their total bill.  All that cardholders need to do is purchase a card and dine out during the month of February to help give hope to homeless New Yorkers.

But we need your help! Right now Project Renewal is soliciting restaurants across
the city, trying to get them on board for this exciting project.  In turn, as part of our aggressive advertising campaign and targeting marketing, participating restaurants will
enjoy increased traffic, revenue and visibility as well as benefit from being recognized as an ambassador of good-will.

Dear Friends,

Thanks to all who came to the September 14th First Mondays at The Parlour.  It was nice to see some old faces and new ones as well (we won’t tattle on who has had “work done”).  It was a great crowd and we hope everyone brings 2-3 people with them to the next event on November 2nd at B. Smith’s (320 West 46th Street).

Our advisory board and free Directory keep growing and our mission is getting more focused. Sure jobless claims are down (again) this week, but unemployment is at record highs, especially in NYC. Further, the nature of work keeps changing, and unless you are lucky enough to be with a Big Company (for now), job security is at an all time low.  I won’t discuss health insurance (don’t get me started) for fear of alienating some of our more
conservative friends, but please send me to France if I ever get really sick (or throw me in the East River…)

As we enter this special time of year, when The Divine One is in the fields and repentance (t’shuvah) through good deeds is possible, may you be inscribed in the Book of Life….and may you all

Kudos to Advisor Joe Searles, Esq. for his mention as a “maverick” on this month’s NFL Player’s Association website (see: nflplayersassociation.com)


Joe is a former NY Giant and  left the Giants in 1967,  to work for then New York City Mayor John Lindsey. His career also includes serving two gubernatorial appointments as chairman and director of the State of New York Mortgage Agency, where he was responsible for municipal housing issues totaling more than $600 million. In 1970, Searles became the first African-American member and floor-broker on the New York Stock Exchange, which he visited in July with NFLPA Executive Director DeMaurice Smith and other former NFL players. Joe Searles also served as the president of the NFLPA Retired Players New York/New Jersey Chapter and was a two-term member
of the National Steering Committee.Today, Joe is recognized for his experience in financial/asset development and urban revitalization. He was a member of the development team for Harlem USA and is currently a partner in D.C. USA, a $141
million retail/entertainment project in Washington. Joe is a frequent supporter
of First Mondays and has been helping us organize for an eventual First
Mondays/DC.

All About Coaching, Part 3: Five Questions To Ask A Prospective Coach

The last two articles covered what a well-trained coach does or doesn’t do. This last segment looks at important information you need to choose a coach.

Question one: Where were you trained? Up until a few years ago virtually anyone could hang a “shingle” out and call themselves a coach. This has changed. Many coaching schools now offer extensive professional training certified
through the International Coach Federation (ICF) which sets worldwide standards for coaching practice. It’s wise to hire someone who has been trained in an ICF program.

Question two: What is your approach to coaching? Check on your coach’s philosophy. Does he or she follow one that appeals to you? Coaches use a variety of approaches.  In addition, is there a coaching contract? If so, what are the terms?

Question three: What can I expect out of working with you? How many sessions does this coach recommend you try before you can see if this coaching approach is effective? How does your coach measure effectiveness? For example, does this person stress insight or measurable
results?  Or a combination of both?

Question four: What do you charge? Fees vary, anywhere from $60 to $250 for a 45-50 minute session. Here it is important to check your coach’s experience and
credentials. In addition, will there be a coaching contract and if so what does it cover?

You might want to review the information in these articles as you think about whether or not coaching is right for you at this time. Whatever you decide, remember one thing: coaching is not a luxury. It is a necessity for those who want to achieve
important life goals. A coach will help you streamline your path to success, thereby saving you time, money and physical energy. Yes, you do deserve a coach!

Advisor Announcements

Advisor Loren Ellis invites everyone to her upcoming solo show “Passages of Time” at the Soho Photo Gallery (15 White Street between West Bway and Sixth, see: www.sohophoto.com).
The opening will take place on Tuesday Sept. 1st from 6-8 PM and the show will be up until Oct. 3rd. Loren ‘s photographic paintings are in many private and corporate collections including The Museum of Modern Art, Santa Barbara Museum of Art, Museum Krakau Poland, Kodak, the Florida State Capitol, The New York Public Library, and Environmental Defense Fund, among others.
