Coach’s Corner
ThE TrouBle with Multi-tAsking
Maria Nemeth, PhD, MCC

Right! The title says it all. Mistakes. Sometimes costly. And some meetings that last way longer than they need to. The human brain was not designed to parallel process. It is virtually impossible to pay attention to two things at the same time. Tibetan Buddhist monks can do it after years of meditation, but not us. Every time we switch from one task to another, the brain has to disengage from the first and then re-boot for the second.
It happens in a micro-second, but each time it happens we’re using just a bit more energy than we imagine. The results? Fatigue. Errors. Not fully understanding what a member of your
virtual work group is talking about as you simultaneously answer your email. That’s because your brain is switching back and forth hundreds of times a minute. Try this: at a meeting or while talking on your Blackberry, refrain from surfing the net or answering your email. Just focus on the conversation. Do it for three days. Notice the effects on your energy and ability to retain information. I bet you’ll be surprised!

Dear Advisory Board,

Thanks to all of you who helped make our July 13th First Mondays a great success!

Our speakers were wonderful and will be posting their power point presentations and webinars on the website by early August. Here is their information, in the hopes we can all reciprocate:

Jonathan Swerdloff, Esq. is a recent graduate of NYU’s Interactive Telecommunication Program with over 12 years experience in blogging, social networking and social media. Jonathan is available to help you make yourself visible online. He specializes in the analysis of individual and corporate online presence via individual consultation, group seminars and “leverage yourself online” bootcamp workshops. He can be reached at jonathan@swerdloff.com

Dr. Sharna Striar has appeared on national radio and television as an expert in the area of sexuality, romance and relationships. She has a private practice in the midtown area of Manhattan and is a consultant to numerous individuals and organizations on sexuality, communication and conflict resolution. Presently, she is researching the comparison between the “free love” of the sixties and the “hooking up” of today, and is looking for individuals from those generations to interview. If anyone is interested in talking further with Dr. Striar, please feel free to contact her at 212-532-3945 or email her at drstriar@gmail.com
