Coach’s Corner
Success: Clearing the “bugs”
from your windshield
What’s important to you? What do you really want? Sogyal Rinpoche, noted Buddhist author and teacher, talks about active laziness. He says it happens when we fill our lives with so much activity that we are distracted from discovering at what matters to us.
Success is doing what you said you’d do with clarity, focus, ease and grace. Let’s look at the first principle: clarity. Speeding our way through life we get “bugs” on our windshield. They consist of the endless array of lists and “to
do’s” that often obscure goals that might have real heart and meaning. It’s not that there’s anything wrong with these lists, but sometimes we have trouble disengaging from them. It’s known as “just let me finish this one thing before I go to sleep.”
Sometimes our vision clears when we’re jolted by an unexpected event. We see things in perspective.
However, you don’t need a crisis in order to wake up. You can start clearing your windshield by looking at the following: “What is the question to which my life is the answer?” You could carry this sentence around on a 3×5 card for the next two days. Look at what emerges. See if you begin to clarify what is essential in your life!
